  • Reasons Why Canadians Hate Their Healthcare Program

Do people in Canada really dislike their healthcare system so much?

    Healthcare Program

US media tries to give single and more of a negative view on the Canadian healthcare system. ‘All Canadians hate their healthcare system!’ In reality it is not really so. Some can complain of course, however, the majority is pretty happy with such a universalized healthcare system. The current single payer system does have some drawbacks which are going to be mentioned later. Still in general for Canada and provinces free marketing or, better to say, American healthcare principles simply won’t do. Of course, the current system is not ideal but it works.

Canadian Public Health Program: True-or-False MythBuster

There are several famous myths about the Canadian healthcare system, for instance, that Canadian pharmacy is mostly about fake drugs. Still there is also debunking of the same myths. It is up to you what to believe in, still facts are facts.

#1. Drugs are of worse quality
MythBuster: The quality of brand-name and generic medications is similarly high because of the same pharmaceutical producers. In addition drugs regulation system is even more severe than in USFDA.

#2. Healthcare program in Canada is top expensive
MythBuster: Indeed it costs up to 10% more than the American one, still there is no need to pay much every month to make sure all family members are insured.

#3. Unbelievably long queues and downtime to see a doctor
MythBuster: It all depends on your living area. Indeed most medical facilities are located in the South of the country, so Northern provinces may face some waiting time.

#4. No chance to choose a doctor
MythBuster: Any Canadian is free to choose any specialist he is willing to.

    #5. Never-ending waiting time
MythBuster: More true than false if it refers to special medical facilities like MRI.

#6. Program covers the basics only and extras are paid by the patient
MythBuster: Basics here mean a handful of services: ambulance fee, doctors’ fee and an impressive list of hospital services starting with tests. Surely, a private VIP room is an extra any patient should cover from his/her pocket. Prescribed pills are also extras, still the variety of them is available at Canadian health care mall.

#7. Inappropriate care and support for disabled and the elderly
MythBuster: The reality proves the opposite. Great care and support for the elderly, disabled and unemployed.

Objective Reasons Why Some Canadians Tend to Complain

In spite of general myths debunking there are still evident drawbacks in the Canadian healthcare system and some patients do complain about them. Let’s name a few to have a complete picture:

    • Healthcare program does not meet all patients’ expectations and demands. The fair enough demand to receive all possible benefits for a rather costly program sometimes ends in disappointment.

    • Little focus on preventive measures and promotion of health. Instead the core focus is on health problem when it occurs.

    • Government restrictions and lack of sufficient financing of innovations in the field of health and care pharmacy.

    • Treatment for some provinces is less complete due to irregular healthcare funding.
